Blue Mood

Hey my dearest friends

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

One day late - sorry. Valentine's Day does not get much attention this side of the world. Nevertheless, my Mom and I prepared a slap-up meal for the men in our lives. Beef Wellington made by Yours Truly with roasted veggies and rice and Tiramisu made by Mother dear for dessert. Scrumptious!

James is also in a big boy bed! Yes, I know it's terribly late, but with all the upheaval we've had we thought it was best not to push the changes too soon. James was ecstatic! We have all been led to look at the Nemo duvet and pillow in his room at least 10 times already. He is most proud of the transition. We just had to make sure that Barney didn't go booof (!) off the mattress (which he did at nap time yesterday leading to much trauma) and then he slept like a dream. I'll attach a pic in my next post.

James is a precious handful at the moment. Please tell me some of your 2 year olds are the same! He comes out with the cutest sayings and has developed a truly naughty sense of toddler humour (Mommy's up the tree, Mommy's in the fridge etc and then giggling), but he is into EVERYTHING. He turned the taps on in the pool area yesterday without our knowledge and they ran full blast the whole night! He took the covers off my Dad's speakers in the lounge while watching Barney and I found him with half a bottle of shampoo over his entire body yesterday. This is all within the space of 2 minutes, because that's how long we deem it to be safe without us hunting for him! :)

Rein is most disgusted because James has become a little Barney fan - and Rein DESPISES Barney with a passion. Unfortunately there is not much choice here - they haven't even heard of Dora or the Wiggles, so the only TV break we get is Barney. I suppose it's really good in one sense, because he's out exploring the garden most of the time. It's just sometimes nice to know he's plonked somewhere, glued to the screen for a few minutes while I'm taking a shower or helping with dinner. That just does not happen...

Our stuff has arrived from the US and is currently sequestered in our great room, which incidentally we had tiled during last week too. It's brilliant having our material lives back again, but SO frustrating not being able to unpack and move in properly. It's definitely taking a toll on us. I guess I just have to look forward to our kitchen which will be in place in about a month and take some strength from that.

They have started digging up the patio now to put in the folding sliding door and new front door. It just looks SO SO bad at the moment - a total construction site and sometimes I wonder if it's all worth it. Also, they've encountered solid rock under the carport where they were digging the foundations for the garage.

Oh yes, I was wondering why this post was sounding so positively miserable and I realized why my mood is probably so blue...
we have had solid rain for bloody ages now! Not quite...but last week we had a typical Seattle week of grey skies and rain all day (no building whatsoever at our house, of course), while this week we've had temps of 30 C (86F) with HUGE thunderstorms in the afternoon. The informal settlements are flooded and cars have been washed away. This is unheard of in Johannesburg. We normally have such temperate weather. Sick of it now - the gardens have enough water and we can use some sunny weather.

Enough moaning for now - off to Hermanus on Saturday! Yippeee! Sun, sea, beach sand, ice creams and whale watching for a whole week. I'll update when we get back.

Finally some Pics...

James at "More House" during the wall demolition process

James with his trusty trike.

Hippos that Rein snapped during his booze cruise on the Zambezi. It's rather amazing that the pics aren't blurry... :)
